What is Ammonium Picrate?​

Ammonium picrate is the ammonium salt of picric acid, with the formula NH₄C₆H₂(NO₂)₃O. It forms yellow to orange crystals and is only slightly soluble in cold water. It is known in ordnance work as Explosive D.

Its defining property is insensitivity: ammonium picrate withstands the shock of setback far better than picric acid itself, which is why it became the standard bursting charge for armour-piercing projectiles that must survive impact before detonating. It is initiated by a booster rather than directly.

Unlike picric acid, ammonium picrate does not readily attack metals to form sensitive metallic picrates, so it can be loaded into steel shell bodies. It is nevertheless kept away from lead, copper and their alloys, and is stored wetted where regulations require it.
