History of Barium Oxide

Barium oxide was long known as baryta. In 1774 Carl Wilhelm Scheele showed that it differs from lime and described it as a distinct earth. The name comes from the Greek word barys, meaning heavy, a reference to the high density of barium minerals. Humphry Davy isolated the metal itself in 1808 by electrolysis.

The oxide gained industrial importance in the nineteenth century. In the 1880s the Brin process used the reversible conversion between barium oxide and barium peroxide to separate oxygen from air on a commercial scale, until the liquefaction of air replaced it in the early twentieth century. In the early 1900s Arthur Wehnelt found that metal cathodes coated with alkaline earth oxides emit electrons much more readily. Oxide-coated cathodes containing barium oxide then became standard in vacuum tubes and, later, in cathode ray tubes.

What are the Uses of Barium Oxide?

In defence and aerospace electronics, barium oxide is best known as an electron-emitting material. Oxide cathodes and barium-based dispenser cathodes are found in microwave tubes such as magnetrons, klystrons and travelling-wave tubes. These tubes are used in radar, communication and electronic warfare equipment. Optical glasses that contain barium have a high refractive index and are made into lenses and prisms for sights, periscopes and other observation devices. Barium oxide is also a starting material for other barium compounds, some of which serve the pyrotechnics industry.

In civil industry the glass and ceramics sectors are the largest consumers. Producers of specialty chemicals come next. There the oxide serves as a drying agent, as a basic catalyst and as an intermediate for barium salts and lubricating oil additives. Research laboratories use it in work on superconducting and electroceramic materials that contain barium.

Disadvantages of Barium Oxide

  • Barium oxide is toxic if swallowed or inhaled. Soluble barium compounds disturb the potassium balance of the body and can affect the muscles and the heart.
  • It reacts vigorously with water and gives off heat. The barium hydroxide that forms is strongly alkaline and burns skin and eyes.
  • It takes up moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, so it loses activity unless it is kept in tightly sealed containers.
  • Soluble barium must not reach soil or water, so waste and spilled material have to be collected and treated as hazardous waste.
  • It is classified as a hazardous substance in chemical and transport regulations, which brings labelling, exposure limit and documentation duties for the user.
