What is Nitroguanidine?
Nitroguanidine (CAS 556-88-7), also known by its old British name picrite, is a colourless, crystalline compound with the formula CH4N4O2. It is best known as an ingredient of triple-base propellants: together with nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin it lowers the flame temperature of the charge, which reduces muzzle flash and slows the erosion of the gun barrel. It is also very insensitive to shock and friction, which makes it useful in insensitive munitions.

What is Smokeless Gunpowder?
Smokeless powder is the nitrocellulose-based propellant of modern ammunition. Single-base powders use nitrocellulose alone, double-base powders add nitroglycerin, and triple-base powders add nitroguanidine as well. Read more about smokeless powder and its components.

Nitroguanidine History
Nitroguanidine was first prepared in the late nineteenth century, but its real value appeared in the Second World War. Large guns firing at night gave away their positions with a bright muzzle flash, and flashless triple-base propellants containing nitroguanidine, among them the British Cordite N, solved the problem. Triple-base propellants remain the standard for many large-calibre guns today.
